A 21-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after his sedan collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of State Road 16 and State Road 21 in Clay County near Green Cove Springs. The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. and sent the sedan into an overturn while the pickup rotated. Emergency responders took the sedan's driver to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The pickup's driver and a female passenger had only minor injuries.
How the crash unfolded
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision began when a pickup traveling west on SR-16 tried to make a left turn onto southbound SR-21 and moved into the path of an eastbound sedan. The front of the sedan hit the passenger-side corner of the pickup's front bumper, which caused the sedan to overturn and the pickup to spin, authorities said. State troopers shared those details with the public, as reported by News4JAX.
State traffic context
Traffic deaths and serious crashes remain a stubborn problem on Florida roads, and the state operates an interactive crash dashboard that can be filtered by county to track local patterns. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles compiles and publishes crash data and notes that agencies can take weeks to finalize reports, according to FLHSMV.
Crash history on SR-16
This stretch of SR-16 has seen other deadly collisions in recent months. On Oct. 22, 2025, a crash near Clay High School killed an 18-year-old and shut the road down for hours. That earlier collision was also investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by News4JAX.
Investigation
Troopers are still investigating the Clay County collision and have not yet released the names of those involved, pending notification of next of kin. Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Florida Highway Patrol. The agency's traffic crash reporting pages explain how to request or access official reports through FLHSMV.
