The DeKalb County School District is facing a significant transition as they consider the closure of 27 schools and repurposing of eight others over the next half a dozen to eight years. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, this development is part of a conversation-starting proposal aimed at using the district's strongest buildings more effectively in light of declining student enrollment projections.
"Nothing is decided," the district stated, and the plan put forward is currently a "conversation starter" designed to spark dialogue regarding the changes required to better align facilities with future needs. According to the information released, the consideration of which schools to close or repurpose was based on factors such as building adequacy, student proximity, capacity, and recent capital investments. By the year 2030, it's expected that there will be significantly fewer students, necessitating the consolidation of resources.
The district's plan proposes the elimination of Cedar Grove, Lithonia, and Towers high schools, transforming them into middle schools due to "low educational adequacy" and their proximity to other high schools. Additionally, Decaturish notes that five middle schools—Cedar Grove Middle School being one slated for closure—are expected to be converted into elementary schools to adjust for the projected excess capacity.
This proposal has understandably stirred concerns among the DeKalb County community. Parents like Jack Johnson, whose children attend Oak Grove Elementary, are already expressing dismay. "We feel so connected to this community, and this school has been so great for my kids. We were shocked and surprised," Johnson told FOX 5 Atlanta. Moreover, educators are seeking assurances about their future roles; Verdallia Turner, president of the Georgia Federation of Teachers, calls for transparency and community engagement as the process unfolds.
Looking ahead, the district has outlined a timeline for a board vote on a final plan this fall, detailing a gradual process spanning six to eight years for the implementation of the closures and repurposings. In the interim, the district is encouraging feedback from parents and guardians, which can be submitted through an online form on their website. No school closures are planned for the 2026-27 school year, and boundaries and program evaluations will commence after the building closures have been finalized.
