DeKalb County has a new face leading the charge for its recreational and cultural institutions. Christopher Bass has stepped into the role of Director of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs, as disclosed by DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. Boasting over a decade and a half of leadership in park and recreation management, Bass is now at the helm, effective immediately.
Prior to his new appointment, Bass served the City of Douglasville where his leadership marked a significant period of growth and accomplishment. Under his direction, the Douglasville Town Green & Amphitheater was opened, boasting a $15 million-dollar tag; and his touch was integral in the development of park projects like Jessie Davis Park and Willing Workers Park. According to a report by DeKalb County's website, his tenure in Douglasville also saw the fruition of a Sports Tourism Program and rapid implementation of the 10-Year Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
"Christopher Bass brings visionary leadership, technical expertise and a strong commitment to community-centered public spaces," CEO Cochran-Johnson appreciatively remarked. The county's confidence in Bass is underscored by his record of delivering high-caliber facilities, expanding community programs, and garnering national recognition for excellence, as noted by the county's website.
Bass isn't new to the challenges and responsibilities that come with managing a large department. His earlier roles include Assistant Parks and Recreation Director in Douglasville, where his oversight extended over multiple facilities, athletics, and operational programming. Even in those early days, his managerial skill shined through as he navigated a $5 million annual budget and spearheaded CAPRA accreditation for the department. According to the same news release, his earlier career at Columbus Parks and Recreation saw Bass managing a raft of afterschool programs and maintaining a substantial operating budget.
Academically prepared with a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Columbus State University, Mr. Bass also comes with certifications and industry recognition that speak to his expertise. His active involvement in national and state associations, alongside a collection of accolades, bears testimony to a career marked by dedication and distinguished service in park and recreation management.
