A quiet neighborhood walk in Delta Township turned into a deadly scene last Friday when, authorities say, a driver steered into a family, then got out and started shooting, killing a child and injuring four adults.
The suspect was arrested shortly after the attack, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the area.
According to Eaton County, the violence unfolded around 5:30 p.m. near Green Meadows Drive and Farmstead Lane. Sheriff Tom Reich called it an active violence situation and said deputies, assisted by the Michigan State Police, quickly tracked down and arrested a suspect.
Deputies found four victims and immediately began life-saving efforts. A young child was pronounced dead at the scene. A 72-year-old woman was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, while a 37-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were reported in stable condition. A bystander who tried to step in and help was also seriously hurt, according to FOX47.
What Investigators Say
Preliminary findings indicate the suspect first struck the family with a vehicle, then got out and fired “numerous shots” at them, authorities said. The suspect was taken to the Eaton County Jail and is being held while the county prosecutor reviews potential charges, according to CBS Detroit.
Neighbors And Safety Alerts
Residents in the subdivision said their phones lit up with emergency alerts telling them to avoid the area and lock their doors. They described a heavy police presence flooding the neighborhood in the aftermath of the attack, WILX reported.
The subdivision sits just north of West St. Joseph Highway near the Waverly High School complex. Officials are asking anyone who may have seen or recorded anything to contact Detective Lieutenant Aaron Campbell at 517-243-9394.
What Happens Next
Eaton County investigators, working with the Michigan State Police, continue to process the scene and interview witnesses while the county prosecutor weighs possible charges. Authorities say they believe the attack was an isolated incident and are urging anyone with additional information to reach out to detectives, according to Eaton County.
