Nearly three years after 45-year-old mother Davina Brooks was shot and killed on Detroit’s east side, her family is again pleading for help, hoping fresh attention will finally bring answers.
The renewed push comes after a recent Crime Stoppers segment on FOX 2 Detroit revisited the unsolved case. Brooks was shot on Aug. 15, 2022, while getting into her car on the 4000 block of Fairview Street, and the case remains open.
Relatives told the station that revisiting the shooting is painful but necessary if it helps bring the killer to justice. They described Brooks as a loving mother and community-minded organizer who left behind two children, and said they are counting on renewed public attention to push someone with information to come forward.
How and where it happened
The shooting occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2022, in the 4000 block of Fairview Street near Canfield, when Brooks was shot while entering her vehicle, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. Crime Stoppers offered an initial cash reward early in the investigation to encourage tips, and Brooks’ family has kept up periodic outreach ever since. Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects.
Reward and renewed outreach
In the months after the killing, the family worked with Crime Stoppers to increase the reward to a total of $10,000, with Crime Stoppers contributing $2,500 and relatives covering the rest, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Family members told reporters they believe even a small detail could shift the direction of the investigation.
Family memorials and community response
Brooks’ loved ones have tried to keep her memory front and center, organizing gatherings and a butterfly release that drew family and neighbors. Video of the memorial and interviews with relatives were shared by CBS Detroit, underscoring both their grief and their determination to see the case solved.
How to submit tips
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Tips are anonymous and may qualify for the posted reward, according to ClickOnDetroit. Police and Crime Stoppers have asked anyone with video or details about the shooting to share that information directly with Detroit police or Crime Stoppers, rather than circulating unverified material on social media.
