A midday crash on Colorado Highway 119 turned deadly Friday, Feb. 27, when a cyclist collided with a dump truck near Niwot Road, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Troopers were called around 11 a.m., and an adult man was pronounced dead at the scene. Southbound lanes at Airport Road were closed while investigators documented the crash and worked to clear the roadway.
According to Denver7, state patrol officials said the collision happened close to Niwot Road and that no other injuries had been reported. The outlet noted that details remained limited while troopers processed the scene and the highway stayed shut at Airport Road.
As reported by CBS Colorado, the Colorado State Patrol put the time of the crash at about 11:02 a.m. and said the Boulder County Coroner will release the victim's identity once next-of-kin have been notified. Authorities had no estimate for when Highway 119 would reopen, CBS Colorado wrote.
CO 119 Safety Spotlight
CO 119, known locally as the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont, carries heavy commuter and cycling traffic and has been the focus of safety upgrades. The Colorado Department of Transportation has been building bikeway underpasses and managing temporary closures near Niwot Road as part of the CO 119 Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Improvements Project, according to CDOT. Boulder County's Vision Zero program also tracks multiple serious crashes on the corridor and frames the area as a priority for intervention, Boulder County notes.
High-Profile Cases Keep Pressure On Agencies
The stretch has seen high-profile tragedies, most notably the July 2023 death of junior cyclist Magnus White, an incident that sparked litigation, advocacy and calls for faster safety fixes. Coverage by Cyclingnews and local reporting, including coverage of the local fallout, as per Hoodline, has tracked the aftermath and the community push for change. Advocates say infrastructure projects, enforcement and vehicle-safety measures must move faster to protect people who ride.
The Colorado State Patrol is leading the investigation, and the Boulder County Coroner will release the victim's identity after family notifications, CBS Colorado reported. Troopers are asking anyone with information to contact the Colorado State Patrol. This report will be updated as official statements or coroner notifications become available.
