Tampa’s Fair Oaks Recreation Complex, billed by city officials as the largest recreation center the city has ever built, is finally open in East Tampa. The new 33,000-plus-square-foot community building started public tours and programming in mid December, with an expanded spread of outdoor amenities set to roll out through spring 2026. For neighbors, it is a long-promised boost in services and space for a part of the city that has spent years waiting its turn.
Spring 2026 - The Fair Oaks Recreation Complex will open in East Tampa as the largest rec center Tampa has ever built. What once required a fight for access is now Tampa's biggest investment in recreation. Every family deserves spaces where they can play, grow, and connect. What the complex includes
The heart of the project is a 33,055 square foot building set on roughly 10.25 acres. Inside, there is a full size gymnasium, a dedicated senior center, multipurpose classrooms, a teaching kitchen and a computer lab, according to Skanska. Outside, the campus adds a turf athletic field, two outdoor basketball courts, two pickleball courts, a fenced inclusive playground and a splash pad, plus about 1.5 miles of walking trails. Project materials say the design also includes a large array of solar panels intended to help trim operating costs.
Timeline and opening
The project moved quickly from groundbreaking in April 2024 to a topping out milestone in October 2024, according to Bay News 9. The city followed that pace with a ribbon cutting for the new community center on Dec. 15, 2025, according to the Tampa Bay Times. City releases say the rest of the 10.25 acre complex, including outdoor courts, trails and lake improvements, will open in phases through spring 2026. Local coverage has also noted that the city prioritized local and minority owned firms during construction as part of a broader effort to channel jobs into East Tampa.
History and local meaning
For many residents, Fair Oaks is not just a new gym and a splash pad. It lands in a city with a long history of unequal access to public recreation. Kid Mason Community Center in downtown Tampa first opened in August 1946 to serve Black residents during segregation, and recent reporting and historical markers trace that story and the center’s recent renovation, according to 83 Degrees Media. In a post on X, the City of Tampa framed Fair Oaks as a major investment in recreation and access, underscoring how much symbolism local leaders have attached to the project.
Why it matters for East Tampa
Neighbors who have toured the new facility have praised the focus on youth and senior programming, saying the flexible rooms and outdoor amenities should open up more options for after school activities, sports and wellness programs. Local coverage captured residents’ reactions and the city’s argument that the Fair Oaks project is meant to anchor further investment and jobs in the neighborhood, as reported by WUSF. Tampa Parks & Recreation has said that programming schedules and sign ups will be posted on the department’s website as classes, leagues and other activities get underway.
