An Atlanta man spent part of his Valentine’s Day in handcuffs after police said he threatened to “shoot people up” outside a nightclub on Edgewood Avenue and pulled a gun from his car. Officers working an approved off-duty assignment broke up a fight inside the club, then confronted the man in the parking lot. He was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail, and police say the case is still under investigation.
According to WSB-TV, officers were working that approved off-duty assignment around 2:37 a.m. at a club at 330 Edgewood Ave SE when they spotted a fight breaking out inside. Police escorted the accused man, identified by APD as Andre Anthony, outside. His brother tried to calm him down, but investigators say Anthony kept making threats, including that he was going to “shoot people up.”
Authorities told the station that Anthony then walked to his vehicle, pulled a firearm from the trunk and, after officers ordered him to disarm, placed the gun on the hood of his car. He was arrested without further incident and taken to the Fulton County Jail.
Charge And Legal Context
Anthony was charged with terroristic threats, a crime that covers verbal or written threats to commit violence when they are made with the intent to terrorize others or cause serious public disruption. Under Georgia law the offense can be treated as a misdemeanor, but it becomes a felony if the threat suggests the death of the person targeted and can carry prison time. The statute and potential penalties are spelled out in state law, which is summarized by Justia.
Edgewood Safety And The Bigger Picture
The arrest lands in the middle of a broader crackdown on late night trouble along Edgewood Avenue. City leaders have been pressing for tighter safety rules following a deadly July 2025 shooting and a task force review earlier this month. The Atlanta City Council recently backed a slate of changes, including more cameras, new curbside signage and a temporary pause on new liquor licenses, all aimed at cutting down on late night violence and unruly crowds, according to Axios. Business owners and city officials say any real fix will require both enforcement and community programming to turn around the corridor’s safety record.
APD said Anthony appeared visibly intoxicated and that the incident remains under investigation, according to WSB-TV. The outlet reports that he followed officers’ orders to put the gun on his car before being taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail. Officials have not yet released information about any upcoming court dates or possible additional charges.
Prosecutors will review the case file and decide whether to pursue further charges once investigators finish their report. Anyone seeking information about the case can contact the Atlanta Police Department’s public affairs office or the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for updates on court proceedings and case status.
