The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced that the southbound lanes of U.S. 421 near Exit 246 will be temporarily closed for ongoing bridge repairs. The disruption, which originally had a completion date of January 29, is now expected to be resolved by tomorrow, as conveyed in the latest update from NCDOT. The repairs became necessary after the structure sustained significant damage from an incident involving a truck carrying logging equipment in December.
Motorists accustomed to traversing this segment of U.S. 421 will have to adapt to altered routes as the bridge at Shallowford Road remains inaccessible tonight. A signed detour will actively to guide vehicles around the construction area. Travelers are encouraged to allot additional time for their journeys and to practice vigilance while navigating detours and the proximity of the work zone.
In a statement obtained by NCDOT's press release, the department specified that the extension of the work schedule came as a result of "recent winter storm," which thwarted the crew's ability to finalize the repairs within the projected timeframe.
