
The National Weather Service in Baltimore MD/Washington DC has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 4 AM today to 10 AM EST tomorow for Washington, DC and parts of Maryland and Virginia. Wind chills are expected to fall below zero, posing a risk of hypothermia.
The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning is also in effect from 4 AM to 7 PM EST today, with northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. These conditions may down trees and power lines and could cause widespread power outages.
Residents are advised to remain indoors when possible, stay on lower levels of their homes during the windstorm, avoid windows, and use caution when driving—especially in high-profile vehicles. The National Weather Service warns that wind chills as low as 15 below zero can be dangerous without proper protection.
Gale and Storm Warnings have been issued for area waters. Officials advise against using generators or grills indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
People going outside should dress in layers, including hats, face coverings, and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors. Animals that remain outside should have access to warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
Local authorities are offering assistance to those without adequate heat or shelter. Residents can call 211 or visit local government websites to find warming centers or other support.
The cold weather is expected to continue into next week, with a gradual warming trend. Residents are encouraged to check on family members, neighbors, and especially elderly individuals to ensure they have heat and access to emergency services.
