A late-night gathering on Chicago’s East Side turned deadly early Saturday when a drive-by shooting left a 29-year-old woman dead and another woman wounded, according to police. The two women were standing in a parking lot when a blue car rolled past and someone inside opened fire, investigators said.
Both victims were taken by paramedics to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Police said the 37-year-old woman was shot in the leg and was listed in good condition. The 29-year-old was struck in the chest and later died at the hospital. Area detectives have opened an investigation into the shooting.
Officers responded around 1:10 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the 10200 block of S. Avenue J, according to the Chicago Police Department and as reported by FOX 32 Chicago. The outlet reported that the women were in a parking lot with a crowd when the vehicle drove by and multiple rounds were fired into the group.
Avenue J has seen other shootings
The East Side’s Avenue J corridor has been the site of other shootings and police investigations in recent years, including a September 2025 incident that left a man critically wounded, as reported by the Chicago Sun‑Times. Those earlier cases have added to concerns about safety along the Far South Side stretch.
What investigators are asking
Police have not released the name of the woman who died, and no arrests have been announced, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Investigators are asking anyone with information, photos or video to share tips through the Chicago Police Department’s online services portal.
