A catastrophic incident unfolded this morning when a driver plunged off an overpass, with their vehicle crashing down onto the southbound lanes of I-75 in Sumter County, resulting in a fatality. The crash, which occurred at approximately 10 a.m., caused substantial disruptions to the usual flow of traffic, with all southbound lanes initially closed, according to ClickOrlando.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred near mile marker 331 by Wildwood, as the vehicle traveled on County Road 462, surmounted the overpass barriers, and descended onto the interstate below. After the crash, not only was I-75 affected, but C.R. 462 was shut down to traffic as well, officials reported. Traffic cameras captured the standstill, later showing a single lane reopening with congestion trailing behind, as vehicles nudged past the scene of devastation.
Further details surrounding the cause of the incident were sparse. The identity of the deceased driver was not disclosed, pending notification of next of kin. Investigators remained on-site to ascertain the specifics of what compelled the vehicle to veer off course and execute such a deadly tumble onto one of Florida's busiest highways.
Drivers in the area experienced significant delays as traffic was detoured at County Road 484, said WESH. Motorists were advised to seek out alternate routes or to anticipate extended travel times if passage through this stretch was unavoidable.
