Tragedy struck the Glover Park neighborhood on Wednesday when a fatal shooting left a woman dead and a child wounded. As previously reported by the Metropolitan Police Department, 34-year-old Rayven Amuan Edwards was found with gunshot wounds in front of an apartment complex on the 4100 block of W Street, Northwest. Despite the effort of first responders, Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 10-year-old girl received treatment at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Metropolitan Police Department disclosed that 35-year-old Stephon Marquis Jeter, the father of Edwards' 3-year-old son, was identified as the suspect who fled with the child in a black pickup truck. The details, released in a statement by the MPD, notes that Jeter later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot after a cross-jurisdictional pursuit ended in a crash. Found unharmed, the missing 3-year-old was eventually located at a family member's home in Prince George's County.
In a joint operation that traversed state lines, members of the Prince George’s County Police Department intercepted the suspect vehicle in Maryland around 6:30 p.m. After entering DC, MPD units joined in the high-speed chase which concluded with Jeter's vehicle crashing at 30th Street and Nash Place, Southeast. Officers found Jeter suffering from the self-inflicted wound; he was declared dead shortly after.
An AMBER Alert briefly gripped the city while the search for the 3-year-old was underway. Gratitude was expressed toward the Prince George's County Police Department, with whom the MPD collaborated closely, helping to ensure the child's safe recovery. The MPD's appreciation was documented in their official update, where they shared that the AMBER Alert was canceled following the child's safe discovery.
