Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration has quietly scrubbed the visible "abortion clinic" option from its online provider search tool this week, a move reproductive-rights advocates say makes it harder for people to locate licensed abortion providers in the state. The change was spotted by advocates and some lawmakers on Wednesday, who are now pressing the agency to explain why the label disappeared.
What changed
According to Orlando Weekly, the AHCA’s searchable provider directory no longer lists "abortion clinics" in its provider-type dropdown menu or in the site’s glossary. Archived versions of the site show that the label still appeared as recently as July 2025. For now, clinics can be found only through outside tools such as Google or by using a workaround inside the state system, like searching for "clinical laboratory" to surface the same licensed facilities.
What the state still publishes
The Agency for Health Care Administration still maintains a public web page that defines "abortion clinic" and spells out licensure requirements, and it continues to post monthly abortion statistics online. Based on the agency’s own public data, the change appears to affect only how clinic types are labeled inside the provider finder, rather than erasing the underlying licensure records from the system.
Advocates react
State Rep. Anna Eskamani said she got no advance notice and texted that "intentionally withholding information from Floridians sounds about right." Cheyenne Drews of Progress Florida told reporters that AHCA "should not be suppressing information about abortion access," as reported by Orlando Weekly. Advocates warn that dropping a clear, obvious label from a state-run tool piles on another barrier for residents who already face long drives, tight timelines, and steep costs to reach care.
Policy context
Data from the Guttmacher Institute show that clinician-provided abortions in Florida fell sharply after the state’s six-week ban took effect on May 1, 2024. At the same time, cross-state travel for abortion care has risen as patients head to states with fewer restrictions. Advocates say that in this environment, clear and straightforward information from state agencies is not a luxury but a necessity.
How to find care now
Reproductive-rights organizations are steering people toward independent resources instead of the state’s search tool. The Floridians for Reproductive Freedom coalition hosts a "Find An Abortion Provider" tool along with a chatbot named Charley that helps users locate licensed clinics and travel assistance. People seeking care can also reach out directly to local clinics, abortion funds, or statewide coalitions for up-to-date clinic lists and logistical support.
What’s next
Advocates are urging AHCA to restore the visible provider-type label for abortion clinics and publicly explain the change so that patients and clinicians are not left guessing how to find licensed providers. Until then, the quiet tweak to a government website is serving as a reminder that even small technical adjustments can have outsize effects on access in a state where abortion options have already narrowed considerably.
