Dealership staff in Folsom were not buying what two would-be car shoppers were selling on Tuesday, and that quick call to police ended with a pair of arrests and a heap of suspected stolen documents laid out as evidence. Officers say what started as a single sketchy car deal quickly looked more like organized identity theft than a one-off scam.
According to a Folsom Police Department post, a salesperson spotted identification that did not check out during an attempted vehicle purchase and contacted officers. At the same time, the identity theft victim reportedly alerted the dealership after receiving a notification about the suspicious activity. When officers arrived, they found one suspect sitting in a silver Lexus that had been backed into a spot directly in front of the showroom, while the second suspect was inside the dealership. Both were taken into custody at the scene and, police say, booked on multiple felony counts that include identity theft, conspiracy and possession of a controlled substance. The department publicly thanked its business partners for staying alert and flagging the scheme early.
The arrest comes as Folsom officers have been ramping up operations aimed at retail and mail theft, a push that local reporting has connected to a broader rise in organized theft and fraud in the region, according to KCRA. They also reported seizing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
The post identifies the suspects as Jose Castellanos of Modesto and Diego Moreno of Stockton. Both, police say, had outstanding felony warrants out of Stanislaus County and Arizona and were booked on the listed felony counts. Officers also collected paperwork and other items that investigators describe as consistent with identity theft operations.
