A devastating house fire in DeKalb County claimed the lives of four family members Wednesday night. The victims, identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office and reported by WSB-TV, included 43-year-old Joseph Thomas, 73-year-old Maryann Chambers, 70-year-old John Chambers, and 70-year-old Willie Smith.
DeKalb County firefighters responded to the scene on Winthrop Drive to find the home engulfed in flames. While they were able to rescue one victim, later identified as Joseph Thomas or "Pac-Man," he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital. Three other victims were discovered posthumously inside the home. Reports from FOX 5 Atlanta revealed that a family member verified two of the deceased as his parents.
The narrative of that night took a heroic turn when family members recalled that Willie "Junior" Smith died while trying to save others from the blaze. "He went back in to see if he could help some of them out, and he never came back out," neighbor Gladys Kinchen recounted in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. Meanwhile, Interim Fire Chief Melvin Carter confirmed that his team provided all possible assistance and mentioned the support firefighters receive after such tragic events, including peer support to ensure their mental well-being, as per reports by WSB-TV.
Amidst this tragedy, Grace Snelling, through tears, pondered the cruel twist of fate that saw the family matriarch Mary Ann Chambers perish in the same way as her children had decades earlier. Snelling shared with FOX 5 Atlanta, "How in the world does she succumb to the same fate years later?" In an earlier fire on her birthday, Mary Ann had lost her own children. According to family members, Junior and "Pacman" braved the flames, guiding two children to safety before their final, fatal attempt to save Mary Ann and John. "They went back in because they love them so much," Snelling said in an interview.
The fire, which has left a multigenerational family ravaged, not only resulted in the loss of four souls but also displaced the five children who narrowly escaped the inferno. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family as they navigate this heart-rending period, attempting to care for the shaken survivors. The investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing.
