A severe accident on Interstate 485 in south Charlotte has left four people with serious injuries and caused major traffic delays, according to WCNC Charlotte. The collision, which involved a car flipping down an embankment near the interchange with Interstate 77, led to a traffic backlog of over two miles, with Charlotte Fire and Medic responding to the crash just past the Nations Ford Road bridge around 10:30 a.m.
As crews worked on clearing the accident scene, Medic took four individuals to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. This information was confirmed by The Charlotte Observer. CMPD urged drivers to find alternate routes and avoid the area, and because of the ongoing issue, the outer loop was reduced to one lane, causing heavy congestion that is expected to continue for some time.
The site of the incident was close to the I-77 and Nations Ford Road area, near Mile Marker 66, where the vehicle overturned, resulting in the incapacitation of the passengers, as reported by QC News. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center was the facility where the injured were taken, their condition yet to be updated.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) indicated that multiple lanes were closed as a result of the crash and the traffic impact was deemed high, drivers should therefore expect significant delays while the three of the five lanes on I-485 Outer remain closed past Exit 67 for I-77, while crews and emergency personnel attend to the situation and endeavor to safely reopen the highway to its full capacity.
