A quiet Sunday afternoon in Franktown turned tense when a fast-moving fire tore through a home on Empire Drive, collapsing parts of the structure and sending thick smoke rolling over the neighborhood. Neighbors stepped outside to watch the plume rise while crews from several fire agencies rushed in, working to keep the flames from jumping to nearby trees and homes.
Fire crews called to Empire Drive
According to the Franktown Fire Protection District, firefighters were dispatched to the house on Empire Drive around 2:30 p.m. Multiple floors of the home collapsed as the fire chewed through the structure, forcing crews to shift into defensive mode to keep the flames out of an adjacent wooded area. Calm winds gave firefighters a crucial assist in keeping the blaze contained, CBS Colorado reported.
Mutual aid and containment
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office coordinated with a long list of neighboring fire agencies that rolled in to help, including Castle Rock Fire and Rescue, South Metro Fire Rescue, Rattlesnake Fire Protection District, Kiowa Fire Protection District, and Elizabeth Fire Rescue. Crews were able to bring the fire under control and, as of 4 p.m., were still dousing hot spots to make sure it did not flare back up. The Franktown Fire Protection District said the family inside the home got out safely and there were no reported injuries, according to CBS Colorado.
A reminder of local fire risk
This was not the first major fire to rattle Franktown in recent months. In December, a garage fire drew mutual aid and sent conspicuous smoke plumes across the area, a visual reminder of how quickly a structure fire can escalate in the mix of rural and suburban properties. That earlier blaze was documented by the Denver Gazette, which showed many of the same departments assisting at the scene.
To help residents prepare before the next incident, the Franktown Fire Protection District maintains wildland fire safety and preparedness resources on its website, including classes and mitigation tips for property owners, as outlined by the Franktown Fire Protection District.
