Residents and commuters in Garner are getting some reprieve from expected road closures. The Town of Garner, NC Government has announced on social media that the planned shutdown of a section of N.C. 50, initially set to begin yesterday, has been postponed indefinitely due to weather concerns. According to the post: "UPDATE (Feb. 3): The closure has been postponed until further notice due to weather." The closure is part of a project for installing wet utilities linked to the bridge construction over U.S. 70.
The closure is expected to impact a stretch of N.C. 50 (Benson Road), running from Umstead Lane to Lake Drive, for around three months, once it commences. Drivers were to be redirected to use different detours, designed to allow them to bypass the construction with minimal disruption. For instance, the detour for N.C. 50 southbound was to continue on West Garner Road to Vandora Springs Road and follow the signs for U.S. 70 East. Northbound traffic was to utilize Umstead Lane and U.S. 70 West to connect to Vandora Springs Road, following the appropriate signage. Luckily, for now, locals can continue to use N.C. 50 without having to adjust their routes.
The Town of Garner's official post assures residents that even once the closure is in place, local access will be maintained throughout. This should provide some solace to those worried about reaching their homes or businesses during the construction period. The area's motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and consider seeking alternate routes to circumvent expected delays once the project gets underway.
Officials have not announced a new start date for the road closure due to unpredictable weather. The project is expected to take three months, and drivers should be prepared to adjust their travel plans once the closures begin. Residents are advised to monitor updates from the N.C. Department of Transportation and the Town of Garner for information on the roadwork and travel adjustments.
