After months of financial uncertainty, the Gateway Hudson Tunnel project received a $30 million federal funding allocation. This payment, restored under a recent court order, is the first portion of the $205 million that had been withheld since last October, according to Gothamist.

Despite receiving $30 million, the Gateway rail tunnel project, which runs beneath the Hudson River, has remained at a construction standstill since early February due to a federal funding freeze. New York and New Jersey officials continue working to resolve the issue, while workers remain on hold. According to a Gateway spokesperson, funds have started to be released, and efforts are underway to resume work on the project, POLITICO reports.

The release of the funds followed U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas’s ruling that withholding them would be against the public interest, ordering the Trump administration to continue payments while the lawsuits proceed. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey officials have requested that the federal government provide a detailed report on the status of the remaining funds. New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport have also called for an emergency hearing to expedite the process.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with local officials, have highlighted concerns over the administration’s earlier suspension of the funds. The Gateway project, which involves the renovation of the Hudson River tunnels damaged by age and storms, affects roughly 200,000 commuters and 1,000 union workers.

Attention now turns to the release of the remaining withheld funds, with the goal of providing the full $205 million to those overseeing the Gateway project. The Department of Transportation, following the court order, has not provided additional details on the timeline. Project officials continue to monitor the situation as funding is restored.
