A section of Granny Road in Farmingville became a crime scene Thursday night after Suffolk County police reported that a man allegedly stabbed his estranged wife to death and injured a teenage relative inside a home. The suspect also sustained stab wounds and was taken to a hospital while detectives investigated the area.
Officers responded to 144 Granny Rd. at about 8:15 p.m., according to News 12. Inside, they found 46‑year‑old Adriana Barbosa and 57‑year‑old Marcos Leal suffering from stab wounds. Barbosa was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital, and Leal was transported there with serious injuries. Homicide detectives charged Leal with second‑degree murder, criminal contempt and endangering the welfare of a child, the outlet reports.
A teenage relative who was inside the home was also taken to Stony Brook and treated for injuries that were not life‑threatening, local reporting noted. As investigators processed the scene, police shut down Granny Road between Mount McKinley and Old Medford avenues, according to Patch.
Charges and next steps
Homicide detectives say they have charged Leal and that he will be arraigned at a later date, News 12 reported. Investigators are expected to coordinate with the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office as they continue to gather evidence and build the case.
Local context: domestic violence on Long Island
The case adds to ongoing concern about intimate‑partner violence in the region. In November 2024, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office announced the sentencing of a Farmingville man to 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to rape and strangulation of his estranged wife, per a DA statement. Advocates say community outreach and accessible resources remain critical for people at risk before situations escalate to deadly violence.
