A Sunday afternoon bike ride on a quiet Greeley street ended with a trip to the hospital after Police Chief Adam Turk struck a 15-year-old bicyclist with an unmarked police car, according to officials.
The collision happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday on a residential roadway, leaving the teen with injuries authorities described as non-life-threatening. Turk stayed at the scene, provided first aid, and waited with the juvenile until paramedics arrived and took the teen to a local hospital, officials said.
What the department said
In a public statement, the Greeley Police Department said Chief Turk was driving an unmarked police vehicle when the juvenile bicyclist "entered the roadway" and was struck. As reported by CBS Colorado, the department said Turk immediately rendered first aid and called for medical help. The teen was then transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. No additional details about the circumstances of the crash had been released as of early in the week.
Chief's background
Chief Adam Turk has led the Greeley Police Department since 2021, according to the City of Greeley. He began his law-enforcement career in 1996 with the Evans Police Department and joined the Greeley Police Department in 1999. Over the years, he has worked in both patrol and leadership roles, including commander and deputy chief, and is involved in regional law-enforcement organizations.
Investigation and legal next steps
Greeley police initially responded to and handled the crash, but the investigation was turned over to the Colorado State Patrol's vehicular crimes unit, according to CBS Colorado. Authorities are asking anyone who saw the collision to contact the State Patrol.
Court records reviewed by CBS Colorado showed that as of Tuesday, Chief Turk was not facing any criminal charges related to the incident. State troopers will conduct an independent investigation and decide whether charges are warranted.
