A corrections officer was stabbed to death Tuesday inside the Morgan County Correctional Complex in Wartburg, Tennessee, according to state prison officials. The Tennessee Department of Corrections has opened a homicide investigation, and the prison was placed on lockdown while investigators worked the scene.
In an email, a TDOC spokesperson confirmed that “the inmate responsible has been identified, and the facility has been placed on lockdown.” The spokesperson called the killing “a heartbreaking moment for our department and for the entire TDOC family” and said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” as reported by WVLT.
9th Judicial District Attorney General Russell Johnson, whose office covers Morgan County, told WATE that the officer was stabbed to death and that the inmate believed to be responsible “has been transported to another facility.” Johnson said his office is participating in the inquiry and that the investigation is ongoing.
Where it happened
The attack occurred inside the Morgan County Correctional Complex, a maximum-security state prison in Wartburg with an operating capacity of more than 2,000 inmates, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction. The facility’s public profile lists its address as 541 Wayne Cotton Morgan Drive and notes that it houses men at custody levels ranging from minimum to maximum.
A pattern of assaults
The killing comes against a backdrop of repeated violence at the complex in recent years. Earlier this month, an inmate pleaded guilty to stabbing a corrections officer in October 2024 with a prison-made “ice pick,” an attack that left the officer with permanent nerve damage, according to WVLT. Prison staff and prosecutors have said assaults on corrections workers remain a persistent safety challenge at MCCX.
What comes next for prosecutors
TDOC investigators are leading the internal probe, and the district attorney’s office will review the evidence to decide whether to file criminal charges. In a statement to WATE, Johnson confirmed that the inmate had been identified and transferred and said more details would be released as they become available. Authorities have not yet released the officer’s name, citing the need to notify family and continue the investigation.
Local officials have urged patience as investigators work the case and asked the community to respect the officer’s family during this time. The Ninth Judicial District’s office, which handles prosecutions in Morgan County, will oversee any criminal case that follows its review, according to the 9th Judicial District.
