Gunfire broke out on Barker Road in Brookfield on Saturday night after police searching for a hit-and-run suspect came under fire, prompting officers to shoot back and critically wound a 31-year-old man, authorities said. The suspect was taken to a hospital with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries. No officers were hit by gunfire, though one was hurt while responding to the active shooting and later treated. A stretch of Barker Road was shut down as investigators flooded the scene.
According to TMJ4, officers learned that someone had fled a multi-vehicle crash, then encountered the suspect while searching the area. The man allegedly opened fire on police, who returned shots and hit him before he was transported for medical care. TMJ4 reports the involved Brookfield officer is 24 years old with about three years on the job and has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is reviewed.
Multijurisdictional team will lead the probe
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, a multi-agency unit that steps in on officer-involved shootings and other high-level incidents, is handling the case. The team pulls investigators from surrounding departments and specialty units to process major crime scenes and provide independent oversight, according to the City of Greenfield.
Officer status and routine steps
Brookfield police say the officer who fired has been placed on administrative leave while MAIT conducts its review, a move that departments generally describe as a standard post-shooting step. Urban Milwaukee has republished Milwaukee Police Department releases that characterize similar administrative placements as routine in officer-involved shooting investigations. Investigators have not released the suspect's name or said whether charges will be filed, per reporting from TMJ4.
The investigation remains active, and officials say they will release more details as MAIT's work continues. This story will be updated as law enforcement provides additional information.
