Gunfire rang out in South Baltimore’s Brooklyn neighborhood last night, leaving one man clinging to life just steps from a city fire station.
Baltimore police say officers were called to the 3500 block of 5th Street just before 7:15 p.m., where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound near the firehouse. He was rushed to a local hospital and is in critical condition, and homicide detectives have taken over the case.
Police say what happened
According to FOX45 (WBFF), responding officers discovered an unidentified male with a gunshot wound to his body shortly after arriving on the scene. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition, while homicide detectives combed the block for evidence.
A neighborhood grappling with gun violence
The shooting unfolded along the same stretch of 5th Street that has been no stranger to gunfire in recent months, a pattern highlighted in earlier local reporting. A report on a June 2025 wounding on 5th Street noted that residents view the corridor as a recurring flashpoint for violence, and neighbors say the tension has never really gone away.
Police appeal for witnesses
Detectives are now looking for anyone who saw or heard anything. Police are asking tipsters to call homicide investigators at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP, according to the Baltimore Police Department. Anonymous tips can be left through those lines as investigators fan out across the neighborhood for leads.
Fire stations and immediate help
Neighbors quickly pointed out how close the shooting was to the city firehouse on 5th Street. Fire stations in South Baltimore have at times become impromptu safe spots after nearby gunfire, with people sprinting there for help or to call 911, according to reporting by Shore News Network. Outreach workers from violence intervention programs have also been spotted at recent crime scenes in the area, trying to cool tensions after the sirens fade.
What comes next
So far, police have not announced any arrests, and no suspect description has been released. The Baltimore Police Department notes in its media advisories that homicide detectives are directing tips to the same phone lines and says they will provide more information as it becomes available.
