In a recent development within the complex case of the Jared Bridegan murder-for-hire plot, the man who initially admitted to being the gunman, Henry Tenon, 65, has opted to withdraw his guilty plea. This turnaround came to light after a judge gave the nod on Tuesday morning, allowing the motion to progress. As noted by News4JAX, "After hearing from prosecutors who had no objection to Henry Tenon’s motion, and from Tenon himself, who explicitly stated that he wanted a trial, Judge London Kite granted the motion."
The original plea involved Tenon pleading guilty to second-degree murder with a weapon, in exchange for his testimony against Bridegan's ex-wife, Shanna Gardner, 32, and her husband, Mario Fernandez-Saldana, 37. It was a plea deal meant to seemingly ensure justice swiftly, but now appears to potentially unravel. With Tenon's plea withdrawal, the case seems set to take a more prolonged and uncertain path to resolution. First Coast News detailed that both Gardner and Fernandez have pleaded not guilty to their charges, further complicating proceedings.
The legal maneuvering by Tenon’s defense raises questions, as the filed motion to withdraw the plea was bereft of elaboration on the reason for the decision. According to The Florida Times-Union, Tenon’s new attorney, appointed amid concerns of a conflict of interest from his previous public defender, has previously represented clients in high-profile cases. Julie Schlax took the helm in his defense, opening a new chapter in the case.
This case continues to be one to watch, as the withdrawal of the plea not only extends the trial but has the potential to reshape the entire prosecution's strategy. Investigators' efforts, which once bore the fruit of Tenon's apparent confession, now must withstand a more rigorous contest in the court. This follows revelations that Fernandez allegedly wrote 3 checks totaling $10,000 to Tenon soon after the murder took place, a detail that may gain renewed significance as the case proceeds. These progressive twists in the saga hark back to the tragic murder of Jared Bridegan, a 33-year-old father of four, whose life was abruptly taken in an "ambush-style shooting" in Jacksonville Beach back in 2022, as News4JAX reported.
