A Heidelberg man was fatally shot early Sunday after a confrontation with police outside a Washington Street home in Allegheny County, capping a 911 call that began with a report of a person threatening to harm themselves.

According to WTAE, officers were dispatched shortly after midnight for a 911 report that someone inside a Washington Street residence claimed to be armed and was threatening self-harm.
Allegheny County Police say that when local officers arrived, they encountered a man outside the home holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon. Instead, county officials say, he allegedly charged toward them.
In those seconds, a Heidelberg officer deployed a Taser while a Scott Township officer fired his service weapon. The man, who has not been publicly identified, was shot multiple times, taken to a nearby hospital, and later pronounced dead. Allegheny County Police are handling the investigation.
