A Lyft driver has been taken into custody by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), charged with the battery of a passenger during a ride-hailing trip. Joaquin Mena Vazquez, 27, was arrested on January 29, after the victim reported that he assaulted her while she was in his vehicle. According to the victim's account, Mena Vazquez abruptly pulled off the road, entered the back seat where she was seated, began choking her, and threatened her life. Fortunately, she was able to persuade him to stop and escaped from the vehicle.
In a post on their official Facebook page, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office presented the disturbing details of the incident. Sheriff Chad Chronister was quoted expressing his dismay at the ordeal the victim went through, saying, "This victim simply wanted to get home safely, and instead, she was met with violence and fear for her life." He continued to highlight the severity of the situation, stressing that, "This kind of predatory behavior will not be ignored." The Sheriff praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward. He suggested that her actions may prevent future acts of violence by this individual. "Her courage may have stopped this suspect from harming someone else," said Chronister. "Predators who target innocent people have no place in our community,” he remarked on the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
