Longtime residents, including Peter Rainis, remember the winters of the 1980s when the community last had access to ice skating at the park. Rainis told ABC7NY that he used to skate there as a child. State Parks personnel prioritize safety by checking the thickness of the ice daily, ensuring it meets a minimum standard of six inches before allowing public access. Park Director Kate Gross told ABC7NY, "We test for a minimum of six as water doesn't come up, we know we're at six inches."
