A fatal collision in Petworth last Friday involving a trash truck and an electric bicycle has prompted an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit. As per a police release, the accident took place in the 4100 block of Kansas Avenue, Northwest, close to Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street. The collision, which happened around 2:06 p.m., resulted in the death of a man and left a woman with critical injuries.
Reports say that officers from the Fourth District were the first responders on the scene of the midday crash. The victims, both riders of an electric bicycle, were found injured. The female passenger was swiftly transported to an area hospital by DC Fire and EMS. However, the male rider—later identified as 26-year-old Kenny Jimmenez Rivera of Northwest, D.C.—succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the trash truck involved did not remain on the scene following the incident.
The preliminary investigation indicates both the e-bike and the trash truck were navigating northeast on Kansas Avenue before converging at the intersection with Upshur Street. The tragic collision occurred as the trash truck was making a right turn into Upshur Street, striking the e-bike. In an effort to locate the vehicle involved, MPD’s Real Time Crime Center leveraged video footage, which subsequently led detectives to a truck in Hyattsville, Maryland. Detectives have now identified the driver, and the investigation is currently active and ongoing.
