Iolani School has disciplined several seniors after reports that a group of students compiled a degrading "sexual list" that named female students and staff alongside crude references. The disciplinary actions were handed down just days before a senior-organized protest calling for stronger accountability for gender-based misconduct. School leaders say their investigation is now complete and that support is being offered to those affected.
What the school told families
According to Hawaii News Now, the school notified parents in letters that the "senior class organized a peaceful protest and community gathering that advocated for increased accountability around gender equality and gender-based misconduct." The outlet reports that sources described a degrading list that allegedly included crude sexual references aimed at female students and teachers, and that school officials are now reevaluating how they communicate with families on these kinds of issues.
In those letters, Interim Head of School Melanie Pfingsten wrote that "A few days before the protest, the school received reports of serious misconduct by some students" and that the school "completed its investigation and carried out disciplinary actions." Pfingsten also stated that "degrading, objectifying, or diminishing others — especially along gender lines — has no place in our school," according to Hawaii News Now.
