A routine traffic stop in rural Kinney County on Wednesday last week ended with a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper pulling four people from a single vehicle, including two children, and arresting the driver on a human smuggling charge. The passengers were turned over to federal authorities for processing, in what officials say is just the latest in a steady stream of interdictions along South Texas routes.
The department’s South Texas region later recounted the stop on X, noting that the trooper pulled the vehicle over on Wednesday last week, found four migrants inside including two children, arrested the driver on a human smuggling charge, and referred everyone to U.S. Border Patrol, according to TxDPS - South Texas Region. The short post ran with the caption “Smuggling attempt stopped | 2/11/26.”
Kinney County Remains a Hot Spot for Border Interdictions
Kinney County, a sparsely populated stretch around Brackettville, has for years been a focal point for state anti-smuggling patrols. Local reporting has tracked a sharp rise in traffic stops and criminal cases there in recent years, according to The Texas Tribune. County officials say the enforcement surge has strained limited local resources and fueled more vehicle pursuits on rural roads that were never designed for that kind of high-speed drama.
Safety Concerns and Scrutiny of Pursuit Tactics
Human Rights Watch and other observers have warned that the spike in high-speed chases tied to border interdictions can pose serious dangers to both migrants and nearby residents. They note a steep increase in pursuits in counties such as Kinney, according to a report by Human Rights Watch. Critics argue that widely shared interdiction clips can glamorize tactics that carry very real risks on the ground.
The Texas Department of Public Safety regularly releases Operation Lone Star updates and videos highlighting similar stops and arrests in border counties, including cases where troopers discover migrants hidden in trunks or packed into the backs of vehicles, according to the department’s Operation Lone Star page, Texas Department of Public Safety. The agency says those public updates are part of its enforcement reporting.
Federal Processing and Legal Penalties
In this latest Kinney County stop, state troopers turned those found in the vehicle over to U.S. Border Patrol for federal processing. The Del Rio Sector, which covers the Brackettville area, handles intake and screening for such incidents and issues local media releases about cases in its territory, according to U.S. Border Patrol — Del Rio Sector. Officials say all individuals are processed in line with CBP guidelines.
Under Texas law, smuggling of persons is a felony offense. Texas Penal Code §20.05 lets prosecutors enhance charges and potential penalties when minors are involved or when the alleged conduct creates a substantial likelihood of serious injury, according to Texas Statutes.
