Construction crews have taken over sections of the La Jolla Cove Hotel & Suites on Coast Boulevard, kicking off a sizable renovation that is closing some guest rooms and reshaping public areas. The work is slated to last roughly 18 months, with scaffolding and equipment already lining the oceanfront stretch of the property.
What the work will do
The renovation calls for enclosing the main-floor lobby to carve out a new bar and common-area restrooms, along with replacing or adding guest-room windows and doors and upgrading the heating and cooling systems. Plans also include structural changes to certain stairways and elevators, installing new laundry chutes and a service dumbwaiter, and reconfiguring exit routes and access ramps. Construction is expected to take about 18 months, and on-site parking is to be restored when the upgrades wrap up, as reported by The San Diego Union‑Tribune.
How this fits with earlier permits
The La Jolla Cove parcel has already seen separate permit activity in recent years. A Coastal Development Permit filing, listed as the "Cove Suites Paraiso" record, proposed a terrace deck over the underground parking structure, added parking levels and a rooftop pool for the 1141–1171 Coast Boulevard block. That application is on file in the state CEQA database and appears to be distinct from the lobby and room upgrades now underway, according to the state CEQA database.
Curbside changes and temporary valet
To keep arrivals moving during construction, the La Jolla Traffic & Transportation Board signed off in January on a temporary valet zone that will occupy about 44 feet of curb roughly 20 feet south of the crosswalk in front of the hotel. Cars dropped at that curb are set to be parked in a nearby structure while the work continues, per reporting by The San Diego Union‑Tribune.
Historic cottages remain a separate issue
The Red Roost and Red Rest cottages at 1179 and 1187 Coast Boulevard, which are landmarked but were badly damaged in a 2020 fire, remain tied up in a separate permit process that lapsed when required materials were not resubmitted. Local reporting and preservation groups say proposals to rehabilitate the bungalows while constructing a four-story, eight-unit condominium behind them have stalled, according to LaJolla.ca.
What guests and visitors should expect
The hotel continues to accept reservations and posts a "Pardon Our Dust" notice on its website, noting that some rooms in the main building are affected and that staff are working to keep disruptions in check. Valet service is still listed as available on-site, and the property advises guests to allow extra time for arrivals while the upgrades are in progress, according to the hotel’s website at La Jolla Cove Hotel & Suites.
