A late night shooting in LaPlace left one man dead and another wounded Sunday night, and deputies say a suspect is already in custody as detectives work to piece together what happened.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office closed off a residential block while investigators processed the scene. Officials said the probe is active and that they will release more details as they become available.
According to WWL‑TV, deputies responded around 12:45 a.m. Sunday to the 1900 block of North Sugar Ridge Drive and found 32‑year‑old Trey Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound. Johnson was taken by ambulance to Ochsner Medical Complex in LaPlace and later died, while a 39‑year‑old man was also wounded and driven to the hospital by a private vehicle.
Authorities identified 33‑year‑old Andrew Brown of LaPlace as a suspect and arrested him shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, WWL‑TV reported. He was charged with second‑degree murder and attempted second‑degree murder and is being held with bond set at $1.25 million.
Recent LaPlace violence
The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the River Parish community this winter, a pattern local outlets have tracked. An early February arrest tied to a teen's fatal shooting also drew attention, and the outlet covered a December shooting on English Colony Drive that left one person dead.
Those cases, and others in recent months, have prompted repeated calls from law enforcement for witnesses to come forward.
Charges and investigation
Per WWL‑TV, Brown is being held in the St. John the Baptist Parish jail while detectives with the sheriff’s criminal investigations division continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses. Authorities have not publicly released a motive for the shooting. Prosecutors will determine whether to pursue additional charges as the investigation proceeds.
