Chicago police say a 44-year-old man was stabbed on a CTA Green Line train on the South Side Thursday night. The attack unfolded around 10:45 p.m. in the 300 block of East 47th Street, and the assailant ran off the train before officers arrived. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was reported in fair condition.
According to ABC7 Chicago, police said the attacker pulled out a sharp object inside the train car, stabbed the man, then fled. Area One detectives have opened an investigation into the incident, the station reported.
What investigators are looking for
Detectives are expected to review surveillance footage from the CTA train and station and to interview riders who were on board or nearby to piece together what happened. Video evidence played a central role in a recent high-profile Blue Line attack, according to NBC Chicago, underscoring how crucial passenger and camera footage can be. Police also routinely canvass station areas for additional witnesses and tips.
Transit safety and federal scrutiny
The stabbing comes amid renewed scrutiny of safety on the CTA after several violent incidents this winter. Federal officials demanded safety improvements following a November Blue Line assault that left a rider badly burned, according to reporting by AP. A predawn Green Line stabbing in Austin that Hoodline recently covered has highlighted a string of similar incidents on the system.
How riders can help
If you witnessed the attack or have video, call 911 immediately. For non-emergencies, the CTA asks riders to use the passenger intercom or contact customer service at 1‑888‑YOUR‑CTA. The security page from the CTA outlines reporting options and notes that CPD provides law enforcement coverage for the system, including a 24/7 Strategic Decision Support Center. The Chicago Police Department lists the Area One detectives' tip line at 312‑747‑8380 for people with information, according to the Chicago Police Department.
