Logan Square is losing one of its most bookish neighbors. Open Books says it will permanently close its Milwaukee Avenue bookstore on March 1, citing financial and operational strain that the nonprofit says it can no longer absorb if it wants to keep its citywide literacy work alive.
The nonprofit confirmed in a press release that the Logan Square outpost will shut its doors on March 1, pointing to mounting financial and operational pressures that made staying open unrealistic, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Executive Director Jennifer Steele emphasized the move “is not a reflection of staff, volunteers, or the neighborhood’s support” and framed the closure as a hard call meant to protect the broader mission, the outlet reported.
Short history in Logan Square
The Logan Square store debuted in January 2023 at 2068 N. Milwaukee Ave. as Open Books’ third brick-and-mortar location. At launch, it packed roughly 60,000 titles into two floors and carved out room for readings and children’s programs. As Block Club Chicago reported, the shop was also pitched as a boost for a Milwaukee Avenue stretch that had been dealing with a string of vacant storefronts.
What remains open
While the Logan Square chapter is ending, Open Books says it will keep its West Loop and Pilsen stores running and will be shifting resources and programs to those locations. Store locations, hours, and contact details are listed on Open Books, which also includes donation links and event information.
Neighborhood reactions and retail headwinds
Neighbors and customers have been voicing disappointment on community forums, with longtime patrons lamenting the loss and others pointing to sluggish foot traffic along that part of Milwaukee Avenue. Block Club Chicago previously documented vacancy issues on the corridor, and recent online discussions have featured readers urging each other to keep backing the nonprofit’s literacy work citywide. On Reddit, self-described regulars are reacting with surprise and sadness.
Open Books says staff are working to move inventory and preserve as much programming as possible through its remaining stores and outreach channels. Supporters who want to stay involved or chip in are being directed to the nonprofit’s online event calendar and donation pages.
