While some units were engaged with the apartment fire, a second call came in about a basement blaze on the east side, with reports of entrapped individuals. As Lorain crews were tied up, mutual aid was requested from Sheffield Village. Before firefighters could reach the scene, a neighbor and roommates managed to rescue a disabled homeowner from a bedroom window. The individuals were taken by LifeCare Ambulance to University Hospitals for smoke inhalation treatment, with one being admitted and the other released. Although initial reports were of a possible victim trapped in the basement, an aggressive search by LFD crews turned up empty when it was discovered the person had safely evacuated before their arrival. The incident wasn't without loss, as a family cat perished in the fire.
