A young man's Friday night took a perilous turn when the floor of a Dearborn parking garage crumbled, trapping him in his vehicle beneath the rubble. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. at the parking structure located at Outer Drive and East Garrison Place, The Detroit News reports. According to Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray, who spoke to the Detroit Free Press, the victim was a 20-year-old man who managed to alert authorities and survived the ordeal despite thousands of pounds of concrete raining down on his car.
Rescue efforts were expeditious yet challenging, as crews navigated the precarious scene to access the trapped man, reported Detroit Free Press; firefighters had to shore up the site to prevent further collapses and used specialized tools to enable the man's extraction, the process was complicated by the need to stabilize the structure and move heavy debris ensuring no additional material would jeopardize the operation. The Western Wayne County mutual aid team, composed of firefighters from 21 cities with specific training for such emergencies, executed a successful rescue within approximately two hours by extracting him through the driver's side window, according to MLive.
The collapse has prompted an investigation into the garage's structural integrity, now cordoned off and policed to prevent public access, with the suspicion that a demolition may be imminent, as noted by Fire Chief Joseph Murray in an interview with MLive. Murray told The Detroit News that other vehicles are still trapped within the structure because of the missing floor, casting uncertainty over their retrieval as safety assessments continue.
In the face of this freak accident and chilling temperatures, the victim, remarkably unscathed, could walk to a stretcher and was sent to the hospital as a precaution, details shared by Murray with The Detroit News and echoed in his statement to Detroit Free Press, "He was very fortunate. Very, very lucky young man." Despite the man's fortunate fate the garage remains a site of caution as authorities work to unravel the day's abrupt chaos and prevent similar mishaps in the future.
