A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head in what authorities say was an accidental shooting early Friday at a home in Manor. Police and emergency crews were called to the residence in the 19800 block of Grover Cleveland Way around 3:30 a.m., and the teen was rushed to Dell Seton Trauma Center in Austin. Investigators say the wound came from an accidental discharge by a family member, and the case remains under investigation.
What the police say
According to KEYE (CBS Austin), Manor police responded to the home at about 3:30 a.m. after reports of a shooting, and a preliminary investigation pointed to an accidental discharge by a family member. Officials have not released additional details about how the firearm was handled or whether anyone may face charges, describing the investigation as active.
The department acknowledged the emotional toll on responders, telling KEYE (CBS Austin) that "it is never easy for first responders to deal with traumatic injuries to children." The statement also thanked Manor officers, Austin-Travis County EMS, and Travis County Emergency Services District 12 for their life-saving efforts at the scene. The teen remained in critical condition at Dell Seton, the station reported.
Unintentional shootings are often preventable
Unintentional shootings inside homes remain a persistent problem nationwide, and safety advocates frequently emphasize that many of these incidents can be avoided with secure firearm storage and training. Research from Everytown for Gun Safety's #NotAnAccident index finds that a significant share of unintentional shootings involving children happen in or around homes and that both younger children and older teens are affected. The findings highlight how safe storage practices can help reduce tragedies like this one.
Investigation and community response
Manor police say the investigation is ongoing and have not indicated whether any charges will be filed. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Manor Police Department or share tips through local law enforcement channels.
