Neighbors in Marietta are demanding straight answers after 21-year-old Kyle Bassinga was found dead in a wooded section of Fair Oaks Park earlier this week. Cobb County leaders say evidence points to suicide, but many residents and civil-rights organizers are not satisfied and are pressing officials to open up the books on the investigation.
At a Monday briefing, Cobb County Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Police Chief Dan Ferrell said the police investigation and an autopsy by the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Bassinga’s death was a suicide, according to WSB-TV. The officials acknowledged the painful historical context the case evokes and urged the public to allow detectives to complete a methodical review of surveillance footage, phone records and witness statements before rushing to judgment.
Police say witnesses saw Bassinga walk into the wooded area on Valentine’s Day, and a 911 call reporting a body brought officers to Fair Oaks Park on February 18. The park and recreation center at 1465 W. Booth Road Extension in Marietta were quickly secured by the county Ranger Unit before Major Crimes detectives took over, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
Bassinga’s family has asked for privacy while they make funeral arrangements, and an online fundraiser describes him as “a shining light” and seeks support for memorial costs, per the family’s GoFundMe. Local reporting and a wave of social media posts have amplified calls for transparency, and civil-rights organizers have scheduled a vigil at the park this week to press for answers, as documented by IBTimes.
Why neighbors are skeptical
Many residents say the combination of a body found in a public park and the area’s racial history makes a quick suicide determination hard to accept. Concerns have spread quickly online, with community members questioning what evidence investigators relied on and whether every angle has truly been explored.
Community activists are asking for a clear, step-by-step walk-through of the investigative findings so Bassinga’s family and neighbors can understand exactly how police reached their conclusion and so lingering doubts are not left to fester on social media.
What officials say they’ll do next
County leaders say they plan to meet with Bassinga’s family to go over the investigative results and answer their questions before releasing additional details publicly. Police officials have said they intend to balance transparency with protecting the integrity of the case while toxicology and other ancillary tests are finalized, according to Atlanta News First.
