Massachusetts residents, it's time to let your state pride shine on the road. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has just rolled out a special announcement: they're offering a chance to snag a piece of history with a special low number license plate lottery celebrating the state's 250th anniversary. Starting today, the RMV is inviting you to apply for the "Massachusetts 250 Years of Independence" plates, donning a patriotic red, white, and blue theme, as reported by their official news release.
With more than 57,000 standard plates already issued within just seven months, these plates are fast becoming a hot commodity among Massachusetts motorists. The designs feature a vivid blue background, 13 stars circling the pivotal year "1776" and, of course, the "250 Years of Independence" inscription. Lottery entries are in for a treat – 1,000 low-numbered plates, including the iconic 1776, are up for grabs, said Interim MassDOT Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, expressing the state's excitement in honoring its role in American history.
There's more to this lottery than meets the eye. It's not just about driving around with a low number on your vehicle – it's about partaking in a shared, state-wide commemoration, a sentiment echoed by RMV Registrar Colleen Ogilvie. In an act of collaboration, the RMV has joined forces with the Massachusetts State Lottery, leveraging their expertise to make the lottery event a success. Together, they plan to stir up excitement and engagement, as Massachusetts State Lottery Executive Director Mark William Bracken shared.
Here’s what you need to know if you’re keen to take part: applications kicked off today at 9:00 a.m. and will run until 5:00 p.m. on April 17. Eligibility criteria are straightforward—Massachusetts residents with an active vehicle registration in the state can throw their hats in the ring. Be swift, though, as only one entry per applicant is permitted, and the drawing will use an electronic random number generator. Keep in mind, winners will not only secure a special plate but also a slice of the state's storied pride; therefore, there is no fee to apply. Winners will be responsible for the standard specialty plate fee when claiming their prize.
Interested parties should head to the myRMV Online Service Center on the RMV's website for complete details and applications. Also, stay updated by following @MassRMV on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. Lottery winners will receive an email from the RMV, but the results will also be readily available on their website for all to see following the May 7 announcement. And a quick note, while you may not be able to hand-pick your plate number, landing any number from this historic batch is bound to be a badge of honor on any Massachusetts road.
