Ground broke this week on a five-story SpringHill Suites by Marriott on the east side of Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport, kicking off the first full-service hospitality project at the long-planned Gateway East site. The ceremonial shovel turned dirt in a part of southeast Mesa that already has major manufacturing and sports tenants, and the new midscale, all-suite hotel is expected to give travelers and nearby employers another option just minutes from the terminal.

Western States Lodging Management and Development is building the 127-suite property in partnership with The Boyer Company, which says the hotel is currently moving through the City of Mesa permit process. According to Boyer, the SpringHill Suites is aimed at business travelers, tournament crowds and employees working in surrounding employment centers.

Gateway East Is Filling Out

Gateway East, a roughly 270-acre master-planned business park on the airport’s east side, has already landed a 275,000-square-foot XNRGY manufacturing campus and the Arizona Athletic Grounds tournament complex, putting the hotel across from some of the area’s biggest activity generators. Those investments helped persuade developers that the corridor could sustain additional hospitality and future retail, as reported by the Arizona Republic.

Timeline And Retail To Follow

Boyer’s project page lists a late-2026 completion target for the SpringHill Suites. Local reporting also notes that the construction plan includes roughly 17,000 square feet of adjacent retail and restaurant space, giving the hotel built-in dining and shopping next door, according to KTAR News.

What Officials Say

“This groundbreaking marks an exciting milestone for Western States,” Cole Smith, chief investment officer with Western States Lodging, said in industry coverage. Mesa officials have been similarly upbeat, with Councilmember Mark Freeman calling the development a reflection of “confidence in Mesa’s future,” while Councilmember Regina Antone said “the need for high-quality hospitality offerings is at an all-time high,” according to LODGING Magazine.
