Tomorrow morning, a stark lesson on the gravity of impaired driving awaits students at Felix Varela Senior High School. In a collaboration between the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, Community Affairs Bureau, and local emergency services, a mock DUI car crash event, aims to visually demonstrate the potential aftermath of driving under the influence, as per the county's announcement.

The event scheduled to take place from 9:15 am to 10:30 am, tomorrow, will feature a staged car crash scene, complete with fire trucks, rescue vehicles, an air rescue unit, and extrication equipment. The simulation is designed to not only show the immediate dangers DUI accidents pose but also speak to the lingering aftermath, hence the involvement of Excalibur Towing and Caballero Rivero Westchester Funeral Home.

"Our goal is to teach our youth the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence," reads a statement from the official press release. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that every day, about 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that's one person every 52 minutes.

The demonstration is open to students and faculty at Felix Varela Senior High School, located at 15255 SW 96 Street. The mock crash is part of a wider effort by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, to address and reduce incidents of DUI-related collisions which continue to take a toll on communities each year. By simulating such a visceral experience, organizers hope the message will resonate and encourage students to make responsible choices when behind the wheel.
