Dana Nessel announced a consent judgment against Hummingbird Construction Co., LLC and its owner, Matthew Ashline, for violating the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.
According to the Michigan Department of Attorney General, the company collected deposits for construction projects in St. Clair, Monroe, Eaton, and Washtenaw counties but did not begin the promised work. Customers reported delays or failures in receiving refunds.
Under the judgment, Hummingbird Construction will be dissolved, and Ashline is prohibited from operating or managing a construction business in Michigan for 10 years. Before the judgment was finalized, Ashline repaid more than $150,000 to seven customers and agreed to pay another customer $10,000 per month for nine months.
The Department of Attorney General encourages residents to report suspected consumer protection violations through its Consumer Protection Team.
