A late-night fire tore through a northeast Houston apartment complex around midnight Monday, sending one woman to the hospital, killing a dog, and leaving one resident unaccounted for as firefighters battled heavy smoke and a partial structural collapse.

The blaze broke out at a multi-unit building on Legion Street near the Eastex Freeway, where arriving crews found flames chewing through multiple apartments and thick smoke pouring from the structure. As firefighters worked to stabilize the partially collapsed building, they launched a frantic search for anyone still inside.

How crews found the blaze

A District 19 fire chief, heading back from another call, spotted smoke and flames and immediately called in more units, according to KHOU. Firefighters arrived to find four apartment units burning and went door to door, searching rooms while trying to keep the fire from spreading further.

Rescues and scene tensions

KPRC Click2Houston reported that crews pulled a woman from one of the burning units and rushed her to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Firefighters also carried out a dog and worked on it at the scene, but a witness later told the station the animal did not survive.

Outside the complex, tensions flared on camera as one man accused another of starting the fire, sparking a brief scuffle while investigators and firefighters continued their work.

Investigation and next steps

Fire investigators had not yet determined what caused the blaze and remained on scene into Monday morning, according to KHOU. Officials have not released the identity or status of the resident who remained missing as crews continued combing through damaged units and debris.
