Midwest City drivers take note: a significant stretch of road will be out of commission for a brief spell. S. Douglas Blvd. is shut down in both directions from SE 29th St. to Renny Rd., a move coordinated by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT). The closure, which started early Sunday, February 15, is for revamping the road's surface, shifting from temporary asphalt to a permanent, smoother layer.
In a recent social media alert from the City of Midwest City—Government, they indicated that the road is likely to be closed through Monday—Presidents Day—and could extend its unwelcome vacation to midnight on Tuesday, February 17. Motorists usually speeding through to I-40 will have to pump the brakes as well, since the on- and off-ramps for both eastbound and westbound traffic are out of order during this intermission.
However, it's not all detours and delays. Those seeking care at SSM Health will find their access unimpeded from the south via Douglas Blvd. Considering the inconvenience, ODOT's advice is simple: avoid the area if possible, and if not, plan for alternative passages. They have appreciated the understanding of the public during these temporary transport tribulations.
With construction zones being notorious for their ability to disrupt schedules into disarray, motorists are wise to heed the warnings. As the asphalt is removed, one can only hope for swift progress and a return to normalcy. All the same, some local commuters, no doubt, will feel the pinch and will have to manage their commutes around these roadwork rhythms.
