The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) is set to host an interactive community forum, aiming to hear residents' voices on various consumer challenges they face. Scheduled for March 5, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, this event encourages public engagement and discussion, setting the stage at Rockville Memorial Library, as indicated on Montgomery County's website.
Gathering feedback on issues like scams, unfair contracts, and deceptive practices, the County Executive Marc Elrich emphasizes the importance of listening as a preemptive strike against consumer injustices. "We want to hear what residents are seeing, whether it’s scams, unfair contracts, housing issues, or deceptive business practices, so we can respond quickly and prevent harm before it spreads," Elrich said, according to Montgomery County's website. He highlights that the flow of communication should be from the ground up, avoiding a scenario where citizens only report once affected.
During what's known as National Consumer Protection Week, the forum will place special focus on emergent consumer issues, thus shaping the OCP's future outreach and educational endeavors. OCP Director Eric Friedman pinpointed the need for a comprehensive grasp of the community's hurdles. "Strong consumer protection is built on understanding the challenges residents are facing and addressing concerns early," Friedman stated, per Montgomery County's website. Attendees can look forward to both large and small group discussions, which will serve as the bedrock for the OCP's strategic response to the concerns raised.
Interested residents must register for the event by Monday, March 2, given the limited seating. The forum is not just an opportunity to articulate personal experiences with consumer issues, but also a chance to inform policy through shared observations and trends across the county.
