Chicago police pulled the body of an unidentified woman from the South Branch of the Chicago River on Thursday afternoon near 26th Street and Ashland Avenue. The Chicago Police Department's Marine Unit responded to the scene, and the woman was pronounced dead there.
Where It Was Found
According to CBS Chicago, officers were called to the stretch of water at 26th and Ashland where the South Branch meets the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal and splits into Bubbly Creek. The area forms a watery border between the Pilsen and McKinley Park neighborhoods and runs along industrial properties and rail lines.
Recent Recoveries In The South Branch
This case follows another recovery earlier this month, when police pulled a body from the river near the 2200 block of South Halsted, as reported by NBC Chicago. The South Branch has seen deadly incidents before: in August 2019, crews found two bodies in the water near Damen and Halsted, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Investigation Under Way
Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and that additional details were not immediately available, CBS Chicago reports. Detectives and marine crews remained on site Thursday, and authorities have not yet released the woman's identity or a cause of death.
