Kendall Square just picked up a fresh all-day hangout. Eastern Edge, a new chef-driven food hall on the eastern edge of MIT’s campus, opened Friday, Feb. 13, bringing nine vendors, two full bars and seating for about 275 people to 290 Main Street. The hall is operated by Auburn, Ala.–based Gather Group.
The 11,000-square-foot space packs in a Venetian-style bàcaro café that flips into a wine bar at night, two full bars, a coffee program and flexible event areas for community programming, according to Eastern Edge. The layout leans into communal seating and flexible zones meant to host pop-ups and neighborhood events.
What to eat inside
The opening lineup blends established local names with newer faces: Clover, Fuji Sushi, Viêt Citron, Perillas Korean Kitchen, Everybody Gotta Eat (Chef Emmanuel “Manny” Mervil), Juicy J’s, Bacaro Café & Bar and Lone Star Taco Stand, along with house bars and a Venetian café, as reported by The Boston Globe. Menus run the gamut from plant-forward sandwiches and bibimbap bowls to banh mi, empanadas and burgers with Caribbean influences.
Chef Emmanuel “Manny” Mervil, a Cambridge native, will anchor Everybody Gotta Eat and run a stall called Chatty Patty serving empanadas. "I used to sell papers right on the corner at MIT," Mervil told The Boston Globe. Juicy J’s owner Jonas Beausejour is slated for a planned two-year residency at Eastern Edge, meant to act as a testbed for expansion.
Food halls in flux
Eastern Edge arrives at a tricky time for food halls, following Time Out Market’s recent near-closure and operator reshuffle in Fenway, a development covered by Boston.com. That situation has put new projects like this under extra scrutiny as operators try to prove they can support both daytime and evening crowds.
Gather Group, a subsidiary of Ithaka Hospitality Partners that runs halls around the country, says its model centers on vendor curation, community programming and operational support to keep venues active. The company lists Eastern Edge on its portfolio page. That operational approach is intended to help small chefs grow without taking on the full burden of a standalone lease, the operator says on its site.
Practical details
Eastern Edge is located at 290 Main Street in Kendall Square. The food hall’s site lists hours as Sunday–Thursday 10:30 a.m.–9:00 p.m. and Friday–Saturday 10:30 a.m.–10:00 p.m., with a coffee bar that opens earlier in the morning. For directions, driver access and the full vendor roster, see Eastern Edge.
Whether Eastern Edge turns into Kendall Square’s everyday “Cheers” will depend on its ability to pull in students, local workers and nearby residents after hours. For now, it gives Cambridge a new spot for quick lunches, late-night drinks and weekend meetups under one very busy roof.
