Residents of New Orleans are bracing for a cold snap as the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for parts of the region, effective until 9 a.m. CST today. According to the weather forecast, subfreezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees are possible, posing a threat to crops and sensitive vegetation.
The warning specifically targets Upper Jefferson, Upper St. Bernard, and Western Orleans Parishes, alerting residents to take precautions. The NWS advises to make frequent checks on the older family, friends, and neighbors and to ensure that portable heaters are used correctly. Additionally, pet owners are reminded to keep their pets indoors as much as possible to protect them from the harsh conditions.
Today's weather, meanwhile, promises widespread frost mainly before 8am but will transition to sunny skies with a high near 59 degrees. Residents can expect a calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. The approaching evening will bring increasing clouds with a low around 44 degrees, adding to the chill in the air.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the city will mostly see a reprieve from the cold, with temperatures gradually rising. Showers are likely tomorrow night, with possible thunderstorms after 3am, and there's a 50 percent chance of showers before noon on Wednesday. Despite the mixed conditions, the sun will make an appearance most days, offering some warmth with highs ranging from the mid-50s to the upper 60s as the week progresses.
